We Vote

When you vote for your school board leadership, you vote
for stronger students, schools, and neighborhoods.

We Vote is a nonpartisan community effort to increase awareness and participation in Grand Rapids Public Schools Board of Education elections. We believe voting can be a personal tool for action among residents and a collective voice for our community.

That voice starts at the neighborhood level, where We Vote works by:

  • building awareness of the spring election.
  • providing nonpartisan voting and candidate information.
  • reaching out to neighbors and community members with a shared call to action.
We do this work in four ways:
  • A Voter Guide, distributed throughout Grand Rapids and online.
  • A Candidate Forum, offered to all community members.
  • Neighborhood engagement, with door-to-door visits in three neighborhoods where voter turnout is traditionally low (less than 15 percent) in school board elections.
  • Communications and media outreach to expose as many people as possible to information about the election.

Our partners

We Vote was created in 2008 by the League of Women Voters Grand Rapids with funding from the Dyer-Ives Foundation, Grand Rapids Community Foundation, and Nokomis Foundation. In 2009, it continues to grow thanks to the support and involvement of many community partners:
